Light Gardens

Light Gardens are a fun, interactive, and educational indoor gardening program that gives students in grades K-8 the opportunity to grow and eat healthy food right in their own classrooms. The teacher’s guide provides comprehensive activities with learning outcomes linked directly to PEI Department of Education science and/or math curriculum, depending on grade level. We offer Light Gardens to classrooms for two deliveries: Fall and Spring.

With the help of our partner organization Nutrients for Life and Light Garden specialist Tamara Sealy, AITC-PEI supplies participating classrooms with an indoor light kit, garden soil and seeds, classroom resources, and training to help foster hands-on, inquiry-based learning. The indoor gardens are living laboratories where students explore, discover, experience, and learn! As students actively co-operate to care for their garden they learn about agriculture, nutrition, environmental stewardship, public trust, sustainable food systems, and community interdependence.

Teachers also receive a comprehensive curriculum-linked guide developed by AITC-PEI and Nutrients for Life. The guide is available in both English and French, and includes activities organized by grade level, specifically designed to complement the science, math and social studies outcomes of our provincial curriculum.
